Atlanta Eats TV visits Boxcar

ABOUT BOXCAR

Boxcar at Hop City is about experiencing great food, beer, wine and cocktails in a beautifully refurbished warehouse space. Our food and beverage menu will change frequently with what produce is in season and what beers and wines we are most excited about to tempt your palette. We want to be West End's favorite restaurant and, at the same time, allow everyone in Atlanta an excuse to visit the amazing food and beverage district. Feel free to grab a beer at the bar and explore the area - the entire development is one huge open-container playground. Come see us before or after your next Beltline exploration.

Boxcar is part of the Hop City Craft Beer & Wine group. Hop City first opened its doors in West Midtown in 2009 as a celebration of the burgeoning craft beer culture. We quickly became a touchstone of Atlanta's thriving craft scene and now rank among America's top-rated craft beer retailers. As we slowly grew, with locations in Birmingham, AL, Inman Park, and Fayetteville, we added 'beer bar' to our repertoire. All of our locations feature rotating draft lists of Georgia and the world's best beers and breweries.

The Hop City family includes Barleygarden Kitchen & Craft Bar in Alpharetta and Fayetteville, GA.

ABOUT OUR MURAL

Wanna win a bar bet?

Ask someone who the guy on our mural is.

No, not Josef Stalin.

It’s Leon Ray Livingston.

Known as “The Rambler” or “A-No. 1,” he spent most of his life riding the rails, and was the best chronicler of the hobo lifestyle during the first half of the 20th century.

Born in 1872, Livingston wrote 12 books on traveling “the hobo way.” Presidents knew his name. He traveled with author Jack London, and was called “King of the Hoboes.”

He’s also the one who is credited with perfecting the hobo symbols system - a set of glyphs that let fellow travelers know where to stay, eat, and avoid.

Livingston passed away in Houston, Texas in 1944.

Boxcar is inspired by the classic American journey. We’re located just steps from the Atlanta Beltline - a former rail line turned into an urban walking trail.

We invite you to start your West End adventure with us.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rory Hawkins (AKA “Catlanta”) is an Atlanta-based artist known for his colorful and fun paintings of cats. If you’ve got a good eye, look for his works on public walls and overpasses around town. He’s also an accomplished mural artist, with large outdoor works in Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Costa Rica. Learn more here, and follow him on Instagram @cat_lanta.

THE HOBO CODE

Look closely at our main mural, and you’ll see some symbols. That’s the Hobo Code - a language passed down through rail riders. They showed travelers the best spots to camp, how to avoid law enforcement, where to eat, and more.

Keep your eye out for these symbols as you explore the streets and pathways around you. Even though the lifestyle and language essentially died out years ago, you’ll still see them etched on underpasses and carved on signs.
